The four dirtiest war movies on Netflix

Our reader Jeanette Reluz picks her three favourite movies on Netflix that shed a completely different light on the darkness of the war conflict

It has been an excellent year for Netflix. Although the first four months of 2022 weren’t easy, and the company lost subscribers for the first time in ten years, it got back on its feet. According to ExpressVPN’s blog piece, the streaming service recovered in the third quarter because of such exciting shows and movies, which brought them even more subscribers than they lost at the beginning of the year.

War movies are one of many genres Netflix is offering. We selected some of the dirtiest war films currently available on the streaming service, including some hidden gems.

.

1. All Quiet on the Western Front (Edward Berger, 2022):

War movies don’t come much dirtier than this movie, which is based on Erich Maria Remarque’s anti-war novel of the same name. It follows a young soldier’s journey from an idealist to a survivor. An early heart-wrenching scene epitomises the extent of the task facing the main protagonist, played by Austrian actor Felix Kammerer. When the World War I raw recruit receives his uniform, he notices that the military jacket already has a name pinned onto it. He naively thinks it belongs to someone else, and he is correct, but the former owner has already perished in the war.

The movie has been submitted as Germany’s entry for an Academy Award in the Best International Feature Film category. The original movie, released in 1930 and also entitled All Quiet on the Western Front, won Oscars for Outstanding Production and Best Director.

2. Operation Finale (Chris Weitz, 2018):

This historical drama, set in the post-war period, tells the true story of the attempt by Israeli agents to capture Adolf Eichmann in Argentina and take him to Israel to face trial for crimes against humanity. The movie stars Oscar Isaac as the Mossad agent Peter Malkin and Ben Kingsley as Eichmann and compares favourably with other highly-rated war dramas. Eichmann was the Nazi who political thinker Hannah Arendt said encapsulated “the banality of evil.”

.

3. The Forgotten Battle (Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., 2020):

This Dutch war epic, directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., is set amid the little-known Battle of the Scheldt in 1944. The paths of a Dutch soldier who volunteers to join the Nazis, a British pilot, and a female member of the resistance eventually cross. The budget of almost $14.5 million makes it the second most expensive film in Dutch cinema history. The movie scooped five awards, including Best Cinematography and Best Production Design, at the 2021 Nederlands Film Festival, so it’s well worth giving this movie a chance!

.

4. Munich – The Edge of War (Christian Schwochow, 2021):

Set in the period of appeasement before World War II, this spy thriller is based on the novel Munich, written by Robert Harris in 2017. Jeremy Irons stars as Neville Chamberlain while George MacKay plays Hugh Legat. Along with his German friend Paul von Hartmann, played by Jannis Niewöhner, Legat is tasked with putting a stop to the Munich Agreement by taking possession of a document demonstrating Hitler’s intention to conquer Europe.

These are just a few of the many war movies available on the streaming service, but whether you prefer historical dramas, war fiction, or true war stories, there is something for everyone.
